Competitor comparison

Lightdash vs Metabase

Open source does not separate these two, so the decision comes down to whether you want BI that reads definitions from dbt or BI that lets people query tables directly.

Quick decision snapshot

Choose Metabase if you want dashboards on a database this week, a visual query builder for non-SQL users, and a mature embedding SDK, without a semantic layer project first. Choose Lightdash if your team already runs dbt and wants every dashboard to inherit metric definitions reviewed in Git rather than rebuilt in each question.

Metabase starts from the tables you already have

Plenty of startups pick Metabase as their first BI tool, mostly because the setup cost is close to nothing. Point it at a database, and people can build questions with the visual query builder or drop into the SQL editor. The self-hosted edition is free, paid Cloud and Enterprise tiers add hosting and admin controls, and the embedding SDK is mature enough that product teams use it for customer-facing features.

That directness is also the tradeoff. Without a semantic layer, the same metric can be defined differently in different questions, and anything past simple aggregations tends to send users back to SQL or to an analyst. Metabot adds AI assistance, though on BI Bench Metabase placed eleventh of eleven, at 12.42% accuracy with a 40.9-second average response.

Lightdash starts from the dbt project

Lightdash takes the opposite route. Instead of letting each question define its own logic, it reads metrics, dimensions, and descriptions from YAML in the dbt project, so a dashboard built by marketing and one built by finance compute revenue the same way. Changes are reviewed in Git, validated automatically, and can be tried in preview environments before they ship.

The prerequisite is real: if there is no dbt project, or the one you have does not yet model the entities people ask about, Lightdash has little to explore. Self-hosting the open-source edition also means running upgrades, SMTP, databases, observability, and security yourself, which is similar work to self-hosting Metabase. Paying for Cloud Pro, a flat $3,000 monthly whatever the headcount, hands that work to Lightdash. On BI Bench, Lightdash ranked ninth at 23.8% accuracy and 82.1 seconds per answer.

Lightdash is the better pick for

Teams that already model in dbt and want BI to stop redefining metrics.

Analytics engineers who want dashboard logic reviewed like application code.

Organizations growing viewers fast that prefer a flat cloud price over per-seat tiers.

Metabase is the better pick for

Startups that need dashboards on a production database without a modeling project.

Product teams embedding analytics for customers with a mature SDK.

SQL-comfortable teams that want a free, familiar open-source tool.

If neither the query builder nor YAML fits your business users

Metabase leaves complex questions to whoever writes SQL; Lightdash leaves new metrics to whoever edits dbt. Basedash lets the person with the question ask it in plain English, then shows the generated SQL so the data team can check it, with reusable measures keeping results consistent. Its 94.8% on BI Bench beat both of these tools by a wide margin. Built-in Fivetran pipelines bring 750+ SaaS tools into a warehouse Basedash runs for you.

Unlike either product here, Basedash is not open source. It does offer cloud, VPC, and self-hosted deployment, but teams whose requirement is owning the source code should stay with Lightdash or Metabase.

FAQ

Should a team move from Metabase to Lightdash once it adopts dbt?

It is a common moment to reconsider. Once dbt holds your business logic, Metabase questions that reimplement that logic in SQL become a second, unreviewed copy of it. Lightdash removes that copy by reading metrics and dimensions straight from dbt YAML. The move is worth it if metric drift is causing real disagreements. It is less compelling if your Metabase usage is mostly embedded customer dashboards, since Metabase's embedding SDK is more mature than Lightdash's iframe and React SDK add-on.

Is self-hosting Lightdash harder than self-hosting Metabase?

The operational work is similar in kind. Self-hosting Lightdash's open-source edition means you handle hosting, upgrades, SMTP, the application database, observability, and security, which is the same category of upkeep a self-hosted Metabase needs. The difference is upstream: Lightdash also depends on a dbt project being deployed and kept healthy, while Metabase only needs database credentials. If no one wants to run either, Lightdash Cloud Pro and Metabase Cloud both remove the hosting burden.

How do Lightdash and Metabase compare on AI answers?

Both trail tools built around AI. BI Bench puts AI analyst agents against a real, complex schema. Lightdash came ninth there, answering 23.8% correctly in 82.1 seconds on average; Metabase came last of eleven, at 12.42% and 40.9 seconds. Lightdash's agents draw on the dbt semantic layer and are reachable in Slack and over MCP; Metabase offers Metabot. If AI is central to your evaluation, test both on your own questions.

When is Basedash a better fit than Lightdash or Metabase?

Basedash fits when the people asking questions are not going to write SQL or wait for a dbt change. Someone types the question, checks the query Basedash wrote, and keeps the answer as a dashboard, a Slack reply, or an embed. On BI Bench it came first, answering 94.8% correctly with a 32.6-second mean response time. Basedash costs more than a free self-hosted tool, with plans from $1,000 per month plus AI usage, and it is not open source.
